Finding housing is only part of becoming stable.
You may also need a reliable way to get to a medical appointment, work, benefits appointment, pharmacy, housing appointment, or your new home.
Calm Waters Independent Living recognizes transportation as an important part of housing stability. Calm Waters may provide transportation assistance when available, appointment coordination, and connections to outside transportation resources, but transportation is not guaranteed as part of every housing arrangement.
The right transportation option depends on where you are going, why you need the ride, whether you have transportation benefits, your mobility needs, and how soon you need to travel.
Can Calm Waters Help With Transportation?
Possibly.
If transportation affects your housing situation, tell Calm Waters when you submit or update your Housing Request.
For example, transportation may matter when you need to get from a hospital or temporary living situation to housing, reach an appointment, use public transportation from a particular neighborhood, or coordinate a move.
Calm Waters may provide practical transportation assistance and appointment coordination when available. A driver or ride is not guaranteed.
Transportation Can Matter When Choosing Housing
A room may look affordable, but location still matters.
Before accepting housing, think about how you will reach the places that are important to daily life, including work, medical care, grocery stores, pharmacies, family, school or training, benefits offices, and other regular destinations.
Someone who does not own a car may reasonably need housing with access to public transportation or another workable transportation option.
Detroit Public Transportation and Paratransit
Detroit residents may have public transportation options through the Detroit Department of Transportation.
For people with disabilities who meet eligibility requirements, DDOT Paratransit provides advance-reservation service. The City currently lists reservations through 313-774-5555. Detroit also operates other transit options with different service areas and scheduling rules.
Because eligibility, fares, routes, and schedules can change, confirm current rules directly with DDOT before relying on a particular ride.
Medicaid Transportation in Michigan
If you have Medicaid, you may have access to Non-Emergency Medical Transportation, often called NEMT, for covered healthcare services.
Michigan Medicaid transportation is arranged through the member's applicable health plan, transportation vendor, broker, or other authorized pathway depending on the benefit structure.
NEMT should not be assumed to cover every ordinary trip. If you have Medicaid and need transportation to a covered appointment, contact your Medicaid plan and ask how to schedule your transportation benefit.
Transportation for Veterans in Detroit
Veterans receiving care through VA Detroit may have additional transportation resources.
The Detroit VA Transportation Navigation Hub currently uses 877-VET-LIFT (877-838-5438) for transportation navigation. VA transportation eligibility depends on the veteran, the trip, and applicable program rules.
Receiving veteran benefits does not automatically mean every ride is covered, so confirm eligibility directly with the VA.
What If You Use a Wheelchair or Need Accessible Transportation?
Tell the transportation provider about your mobility needs when arranging the ride, not after the vehicle arrives.
Depending on eligibility and location, accessible transportation may be available through paratransit, Medicaid NEMT, veteran transportation services, or another authorized provider.
If transportation access affects whether a particular home will work for you, include that information in your Calm Waters Housing Request.
What About Transportation After a Hospital Discharge?
Transportation can become especially important when someone has been medically cleared to leave a hospital but does not have an easy way to reach the housing destination.
The housing side and the transportation side should both be confirmed. A discharge plan should not assume that Calm Waters has housing simply because someone needs somewhere to go, and it should not assume a ride is available simply because housing has been identified.
If a hospital caseworker is assisting you, ask about transportation resources connected to the discharge plan as well.
Do You Need a Car to Live Independently?
No.
Not owning a vehicle does not automatically mean someone cannot live independently.
People may use public transit, paratransit, Medicaid transportation for eligible medical trips, veteran transportation programs, family or friends, rideshare services, or other community transportation resources.
What Transportation Information Should You Give Calm Waters?
When transportation affects your housing search, explain what you actually need rather than simply writing "needs transportation."
Useful information can include whether you have a car, rely on public transit, need access to a particular work or appointment area, use a mobility device, have Medicaid or veteran transportation benefits, or need help planning transportation related to move-in.
Transportation and Calm Waters Housing
Calm Waters accepts housing requests and referral/navigation relationships across Michigan, but Calm Waters-operated housing availability remains location-specific and must be verified.
Transportation works similarly: do not assume a particular transportation service or ride is available until it has actually been confirmed.
Calm Waters may help coordinate or identify transportation resources when available, but it does not guarantee transportation, insurance coverage, Medicaid authorization, VA transportation eligibility, or a particular transportation provider.
Need Housing and Transportation Is Part of the Problem?
Start a Calm Waters Housing RequestTell Calm Waters where you need housing, when you want to move, your room preference, and any transportation issue that could affect your housing search or move-in.
Submitting a Housing Request does not guarantee housing or transportation, but it gives Calm Waters the information needed to understand the situation and identify the appropriate next housing step.
