Leaving a hospital can create an urgent housing question, but hospital discharge does not establish eligibility for a particular housing provider or guarantee that a room is available.

Independent Housing Is Different From Medical or Residential Care

Independent shared housing is primarily housing. It is not a substitute for skilled nursing, assisted living, adult foster care, inpatient treatment, detoxification, medication administration, personal care, or continuous supervision.

Outside Services Can Remain Separate

A resident may receive appropriate outside home-health, case-management, behavioral-health, transportation, or other services while living independently when those services are arranged separately. Those services are not automatically services of the housing provider.

Use Minimum-Necessary Housing Information

Useful referral information includes the requested move-in timeframe, preferred location, room preference, realistic budget or expected payment source, reliable contact information, and relevant housing-related accessibility or accommodation needs. Extensive medical history is not automatically required for a housing referral.

Human Review Matters

Referral professionals can provide accurate housing information and explain known needs, while consequential eligibility, accommodation, screening, availability, and placement decisions remain with the applicable authorized housing decision-makers.

Funding and Availability Must Be Confirmed

Insurance, Medicaid enrollment, veterans benefits, SSI, SSDI, or another benefit does not automatically establish payment for independent housing. A hospital referral also does not reserve a bed or create an available room.

Calm Waters Service Boundary

Calm Waters provides nonmedical independent shared housing and housing referral/navigation. It does not provide nursing, personal care, medication administration, medical monitoring, clinical treatment, detoxification, or continuous supervision. It is not emergency shelter.
